Project Description

Patient Profile + Data:

Project Details

We received patient data in order to make a diagnosis. Once the diagnosis was made, it had to be accounted for in the production of the implant. The diagnosis may affect the material, structure, shape or size of the implant and that is up to us to infer. Once the diagnosis was made and a suitable implant was decided upon, the team split into two groups. The first group of two worked with Autodesk Inventor to make a solid model of the implant. The second group of two worked with Python to make a computer model that could display estimated properties of the implant through mathematical calculations.

Project Summary:

  • In order to form the diagnosis, we were given the opportunity to speak with various medical professionals in our design studio

  • After analyzing the scans, we realized they didn't show us much about the patient's conditions, so we looked to her numerical data

  • After careful research and consideration, we determined that the patient had obtained osteoporosis as a result of many years taking prednisone to treat her secondary R.A

  • We designed the implant based on her diagnosis

  • We used titanium metal because it offered the best properties to not negatively impact her existing bone by Wolff's law

  • We incorporated many different aspects into the implant such as a bio-compatible film to encourage bony in-growth, a dual mobility cup to promote simple motion and much more described through our final report

  • I worked in the coding team and really enjoyed furthering my knowledge of python

  • The final presentation was a design expo where all the groups in our course got to showcase their implants

  • The evaluation for the code was an interview in our sub-team with a TA where they got to change our code somehow and we had to find the bug and fix

  • The TA in the interview also evaluated us through questions on python structures
